You cannot recover a joomla administrator password, but you can reset any Joomla administrator password.
To do this you will need:
- Hosting control panel login details
- You may also need your database username and password - these can be found in your sites configuration.php file
- An MD5 password string - this string is for the word 'password' = 5f4dcc3b5aa765d61d8327deb882cf99
Resetting Joomla Admin Password
Login to your hosting control panel
Find the MySQL / phpMyAdmin link and click through
You will now see a list of all databases connected to your hosting account, click to manage/administer your live database
You might need to enter the databases username and password, as mentioned above these can be found in your configuration.php file
You are now in phpMyAdmin
On the left will be two links 'information_schema' - 'your database', click your database
Locate the ????_users table link and click it - by default your tables prefix is jos_ you should change this foe security reasons
You will see a list of users, locate your 'Super User' Joomla 1.6+ or 'Super Administrator' Joomla 1.5 account and click the edit link
You will see a table of labels and fields, across from the password label is a text field with a jumbled up string of characters
Delete those charicters and paste in 5f4dcc3b5aa765d61d8327deb882cf99

Now go to the administrator login page and enter your username with the password - password
You will now be logged in ans should change your password straight away.
